If your basement is flooding, stay out of it

Standing water and electrical outlets are a dangerous mix. Don’t wade in. Shut off the main water valve only if you can reach it safely, keep clear of the water, and call us.

Overview

Why a call to an emergency plumber in Westchester can’t wait until morning

A plumbing emergency left alone turns into water damage, and water damage turns into mold. The sooner the water is stopped, the less it costs to fix.

As an emergency plumber serving Westchester County, KBD Plumbing & Heating takes calls around the clock for homes, apartments, co-ops and businesses, from Dobbs Ferry and the Rivertowns to Yonkers, Scarsdale and White Plains. Tell us what’s happening and we’ll tell you exactly what to do while we’re on the way.

What we handle

When to call an emergency plumber in Westchester

Frozen & burst pipes

Water you can’t stop from a split pipe or a supply line.

Sewage backing up

Wastewater coming up through a floor drain, tub or toilet.

A gas smell

Get out and call 911 or the gas utility from outside. Once it is safe, we find and repair the leak.

No heat in freezing weather

A gas boiler that won’t fire while the steam or hot-water radiators go cold.

No water at all

Every faucet dry, which in a cold snap often means a frozen pipe.

Flooding from above or below

Water through the ceiling from another apartment, or a basement filling after a sump pump fails.

Good to know

What to do first

  • Shut off the main water valve, usually where the line enters the house
  • If you smell gas, get everyone out and call 911 or the gas utility from outside
  • Turn off the water heater if it’s the one leaking
  • Stop running water if sewage is backing up
  • Move valuables and electronics away from the water
  • Take photos of the damage for your insurance
  • Don’t pour chemical drain cleaners into a backed-up line

Questions

Emergency plumbing: common questions

Still not sure? Phone us — asking costs nothing.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water you cannot stop, sewage backing up, a gas smell, no heat or hot water in freezing weather, and no water at all. Those get emergency plumbing service at any hour. For gas, leave the building and call 911 or the utility from outside first. A dripping faucet or a slow drain can usually wait for a daytime visit at a time that suits you, and we will say so on the phone.

Should I call 911 or an emergency plumber?

Call 911 first for a gas smell, a fire risk or anyone hurt. For water you can’t stop, sewage backing up or no heat, call an emergency plumber in Westchester: shut the main valve if it is water, then phone us.

How do I shut off my water?

The main shut-off valve is usually in the basement or utility area where the water line enters the house. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you can’t find it, call us and we’ll help you locate it over the phone.

Is no heat an emergency?

In freezing weather, yes, and it is ours to fix if the house heats with a gas boiler feeding hot water or steam radiators. We do not work on oil heat, furnaces or air conditioning, and we will say so on the phone rather than send someone out.

Is a leaking water heater an emergency?

Yes. Turn off its power or gas supply and the cold water inlet, then call. If the unit is more than about ten years old, replacement is often the better call.

Do you handle apartments and co-ops?

Yes. Our emergency plumber service in Westchester covers apartment buildings, co-ops and condos, and we provide a certificate of insurance whenever building management asks for one.

Who licenses plumbers in Westchester County?

The county. Plumbing in Westchester County is licensed by the county, and cities such as Yonkers work from that county license rather than issuing their own. KBD holds Westchester County plumbing license #1744 and is insured, with a certificate of insurance for any building that asks.
